Charleston, SC based PCI Certified precast / prestressed concrete manufacturing plant is looking for a Quality Control Manager / Technician.

Summary of Position:

Directs and coordinates the Company’s Quality Control program for documentation, testing, and inspection of components and finished products to ensure conformance with given standards and production shop drawings.  Works closely with plant production to prevent problems from occurring and solve them when they do occur.


Reports directly to the Plant Manager

Specific Duties / Responsibilities / Functions:

     Pre-Production Phase (15%)

  • Review preliminary samples of concrete mix
  • Review job specifications
  • Gather and submit documents to proper jurisdiction for pre-production approval
  • Involved in pre-production meeting(s) with project management and production staff
  • Submit concrete mix design(s)
  • Coordinate any testing of project raw materials and report as required

     Production Phase (80%)

  • Manage personnel and coordinate daily responsibilities which include:
    • Fresh Concrete Tests
    • Pre-pour Inspections
    • Post-pour Inspections
    • Cured Concrete Testing and Acceptance
    • Embed Inspection
    • Rebar Receiving and Acceptance
    • Strand Receiving and Acceptance
    • Prestressing Operations
    • Aggregate and Cement Receiving, Testing, and Acceptance
    • Embed / Weld Shop Inspection and Acceptance
    • Receiving and Filing of Mill Certifications from Suppliers
    • Miscellaneous Daily Projects
  • Review all production on daily basis
  • Work with production daily on improving overall quality by communicating observations
  • Provide support to Engineers as required
  • Coach and mentor employees
  • Coordinate and communicate with Special Inspection Agency and PCI inspections
  • Coordinate or perform pre-pour checks on the forms in production.Look for overall conformance with specifications and company standards
  • Coordinate or perform post-pour inspection of finished product and provide approval for all product that meets company quality standards.Look for overall conformance with specifications and company standards.
  • Once product is approved by Tekna quality control personnel, coordinate post-pour inspection of finished product by client, client’s representative, or DOT inspectors.If additional work is required, communicate this work to production.If approved for shipment, provide updated product status to production and project management personnel.
  • Hold weekly meeting with production and oversee QC involvement and participation in all phases of production.
  • Maintain Tekna Corporation production grading program.Make sure proper input of all data is done by office personnel and report result to plant management.
  • Maintain and manage Tekna Corporation activities including the Quality Control manual, facilitate the PCI quality committee meetings, internal audits, etc.

Research and Development / Testing (5%)

  • Coordinate any Research and Development assigned
  • Research new products that have potential to improve quality or efficiency of production
  • Develop and test new mix designs as required

Job Specifications:

  • Kind and Length of Experience:
    • Minimum 2 years experience in concrete Quality Control
  • Specialized Knowledge:
    • Math Skills
    • Excellent communication skills
    • Ability to read and interpret Building Code requirements
    • Ability to read, understand, and interpret architectural and engineering documents
  • Minimum Knowledge/ Education / Certification / License Requirements:
    • 4 year degree preferred. 2-year associate degree and min. 2 years job-related experience required
    • ACI Certification required; PCI Level II Certification preferred
    • DOT specific quality control certifications preferred
    • Solid understanding of plant practices and quality control procedures to include thorough grasp on Tekna Corporation QSM and PCI MNL 116
    • Must be skilled in using computer and Excel and Word software
  • Physical Requirements
    • Must be able to walk in a plant construction environment with extended periods of walking and standing
    • Must be able to occasionally lift up to 50 lbs
    • Must be able to distinguish between slightly different shades of the same color
    • Must be able to communicate effectively with QC staff, plant personnel, and Management

    • Position requires being outdoors regularly
    • Ability to travel occasionally to jobsites
    • Must be willing to work late on week-days and weekends as requirement by production or QC testing requirements

    • Identifying and solving color / texture / pouring issues
    • Identifying and participating in the solution for repeat casting problems
  • Most Complex Problems:
    • Investigating, diagnosing, and remedying concrete strength or consistency problems
    • Development of departmental plans, both short and long term

Authority and Decision Making

  • Complete Authority for Making:
    • Assigning Quality Control Personnel to daily tasks.Responsible for all personnel decisions such as hiring and termination.Carry out performance reviews for department employees.Submit all necessary documents and submittals to GC.Communicate as required with General Contractor, Owner, Owner’s Rep, Architect, City or County Inspectors, etc.Determining if a panel has been found defective under the plant quality program.
  • Referred to Others for Approval
    • Salary recommendations, decisions regarding product repair / recasts involving exposed reinforcing or strand, large scale testing programs, changes to mix designs are approved by the VP/General Manager.

Under the direction of the Operations Manager, the Quality Control Inspector performs and documents QC Inspections of all architectural precast concrete products, evaluating pieces for dimensional accuracy, required tolerances and appearance; and assists in interpreting piece tickets for production.
