QUALIFICATIONS FOR A PRECAST ESTIMATOR

  • Preferred that applicants have Certified Professional Estimator certification from ASPE (American Society of Professional Estimators)
  • Preferred that applicants have some experience with BIM and 3D Modeling
  • Any experience in construction or precast concrete or a related trade industry is a plus.
  • Ability to communicate in both written and verbal formats of English at a professional business level required.
  • Candidates not already residing in Northeast, OH must be willing to relocate.

RESPONSIBILITIES, INCLUDE, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:

  • Quantitative "Take-Off" Precast Concrete Product Scope of work from Bid Drawing Documents.
    • FYI: We are planning to transition to model-based estimating utilizing BIM technology. Create 3-D BIM massing models for cost estimation.
  • (Planned transition) Develop and create 3-D BIM massing models for presentation to Customers.
  • Review and analyze bid construction and contractual specifications.
  • Identify Scope of Work, Qualifications and Exclusions.
  • Manage Vendor Pricing: Prepare Invitation for bids, solicit, review, level and summarize.
  • Estimate Manufacturing/Production and Installation costs.
  • Prepare and provide detailed and summarized estimate reports.
  • Review Customer Scope of Work check lists.
  • Reconcile Estimates to Final As-Sold Sales Orders and Company cost coding system for Sales Order Processing.
  • Maintain Bid Calendar and Bid schedules.
  • Track performance metric data.
  • Perform Quick Budget Estimates for Budget / ROM (rough-order-of-magnitude) Pricing.
  • Provide Value Engineering when needed.
  • Support Sales Team as required.
  • Interface with all internal departments for relevant cost data and processes.
  • Other duties as required

Forterra is seeking a qualified full-time Estimator for its Salt Lake City, UT location.  The Estimator is responsible for project bids along with generating shop drawings and layouts for precast concrete projects. This position supports all aspects of a safe working environment by following organizational policies, processes, procedures and OSHA requirements.  Forterra Structural Precast is the premier structural and architectural precast concrete manufacturer in Utah, Idaho, and surrounding states. 

Essential Functions:

  • Safety
    • Comply with all safety regulations, and adhere to company OSHA safety guidelines at all times.  Promote a safe work environment for all team members, vendors and customers.
    • Must be able to follow all appropriate safety practices.
    • Actively participate in plant safety program and perform regular safety STOP audits.
  • Administer FSP estimating program.
    • Navigate program/printing estimate sheets.
    • Entering take-offs/project information.
    • Completing estimate  sheets appropriately placing costs for NOS sheets. Writing NOS’s and doing Oracle conversions.
    • Editing/revising existing estimates.
    • Enter job cost and price data into Salesforce.
  • Ability to read and understand specifications and contract documents (i.e. Precast spec’s, referenced spec’s, and guide spec’s, military, DOT, food processing, hospital, and mining spec’s, military, DOT).
  • Print bid documents. Obtain logins for Isqft, Smartbid, Dodge, etc.
    • Navigate posted bid search engines and research for addenda.
    • Research and obtain needed in-house information and pricing. (i.e. production and steel labor hours. Yarding, hauling, and erection considerations scheduling impacts).
    • Research out-of-house information and pricing. Establish a database of vendors (i.e. crane, engineering, hardware, foam, etc)
    • Convert competing systems to precast.  Distinguish between high-value and low-value conversion opportunities.  Demonstrate ability to fill in the blanks without grossly overshooting.
    • Estimate a project with no documents.
      • Demonstrate the ability to envision and quantify a qualified estimate
    • Write proposals and qualifying proposal terms.
    • Maintain estimate log and competition tracking current, update estimating log, and track competition pricing.
    • Follow established FSP procedures plan.
      • Describe and follow each step in the FSP estimating process.
  • Estimate costs within -2% to +5% of actual. Monthly job closings and provide updates.
  • Research outside engineering and erection pricing on all projects along with quotes of other significant material cost items.
  • Ensure all job specifications and instructions to bidders are thoroughly reviewed prior to estimating a project. Require salesmen to obtain and also review such if they exist before estimating job
  • Assist Sales team with booking budgeted revenue goals.
  • Familiar with production and erection procedures and practices.
  • Regular, timely attendance to meet organizational needs in an efficient and effective manner.
  • Any other miscellaneous tasks assigned by management at any given time and in any given area.

Qualifications/Requirements:

  • Associates degree in construction management, drafting, or similar program
  • Three to five years of experience in estimating costs for construction; preferably with architectural and structural precast products
  • Proficient computer skills, including Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook and database systems. Drafting software experience is a plus (ACAD and Blue beam). 
  • Ability to read and understand plans and specifications.
  • Works as an effective and proactive team player; understands the importance of supporting our customers and sales team.
  • Adapts to changes in the work environment, manages competing demands and is able to deal with frequent change, delays or unexpected events.
  • Must possess organization, prioritization and proactive problem solving skills.
