The Vice President / General Manager is responsible for the profitable growth of the business.  The purpose of this position is to lead and direct all departmental functions of the business in order to grow in the marketplace, produce quality products and services, and achieve bottom-line financial targets. 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • PLANNING:  Creates annual budget, sales growth, and operating plans for the business, working with the Owner and CFO.  Sales plan includes customer sales targets and new customer accounts.  Operational plans include productivity and cost reduction targets. These plans become the roadmap for the business throughout the year.
  •  SALES & MARKETING GROWTH:   Drives for increased sales through customer visits and introduction of Stonecast in the marketplace.  Oversees estimating process on key projects to ensure the projects are value engineered, scope is clear, engineering is accurate and bid proposals are delivered on time and with accuracy to the correct customers.  Works with sales staff to sell Stonecast and negotiate with customers to be awarded key jobs.
  • FINANCIAL PROFITABILITY:  Understands all the financial levers of the business and acts on them accordingly to drive profitability.  Key levers include increasing margins through sales growth, purchasing of supplies and services, operational costs and savings potential, productivity of the operations, cost of quality and many others.  Leads the business to effectively manage these profit levers resulting in achieving or exceeding financial targets.
  • OPERATIONS:  Holds Quality Control, Plant, and Yard Managers accountable for sound operational practices and policies with a focus on safety, productivity, cost and housekeeping.  Oversees the production schedule to maintain an efficient business flow across the operations.  Ensures the production operations have the right tools and techniques to be an effective and efficient, low cost operation.
  • QUALITY ASSURANCE:   Leads the overall quality direction for the business.  Ensures the quality standard is set at the highest level and conforms with PCI standards.  Sets overall direction for Plant, Quality Control, and Yard Managers to perform to the standards and maintain the industry-leading product quality.
  • DESIGN / ENGINEERING:  Assists engineering and project managers in setting standards in design and engineering practices.  Has oversight of all facets of key projects, scope, design and operational challenges, cost, customer awards and schedule.  Understands AutoCAD design software and BIM opportunities for growth. 
  •  ESTIMATING / PROJECT MANAGEMENT: Has oversight of estimating process to ensure all is accurate, timely, and designed to maximize productivity for business operations and profitability.  Attends PM meetings to All project management is organized, effective and designed to provide
  • HUMAN RESOURCES:  Responsible for hiring, performance evaluation, and training of management personnel.  Maintains a positive, fast-paced culture with focus on effective communication, quality, sense of urgency, creative problem solving and results.  Works with HR Director to set policies and procedures and ensures all are enforced.
  • SAFETY AND ENVIRONMENT:  Keeps safety at the forefront of the business, models the safe way and ensures all policies and safety and/or environmental procedures are in place and enforced.  Ensures any outside agency reporting is completed in an accurate and timely fashion.

The focus of the role and our mission is increasing the use of precast, prestressed concrete products in the Illinois and Wisconsin commercial and infrastructure construction markets through cooperative marketing of our members’ design, manufacturing, and construction expertise.  This unique role requires someone able to balance executive leadership while engaging at the tactical level.  You have full responsibility for managing the Chapter and all its programs, and engaging with our membership, potential customers, and future talent pipeline. Additional key attributes for our next Executive Directors include entrepreneurial drive, externally and internally focused, and high emotional intelligence.  

What you bring…
Bachelor’s Degree in a business-focused or engineering program
Five (5) plus years’ experience in the construction industry, preferably in an externally focused role
Precast/prestressed industry experience preferred
Previous experience managing programs with fiscal accountability
Marketing experience including the use of social media platforms and website maintenance
Strong technology skills including demonstrated use of Microsoft Office Suite including PowerPoint
Self-motivated and competitive with strong organizational and interpersonal skills
Experience presenting to groups, including the development of materials
Ability to prepare, provide, and convey diversified, sometimes technical information 
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Professional and positive demeanor
Maintains the standards of ethical business practices in all activities
Ability to create new educational programs for membership and other key stakeholders
Ability to travel 30-40% within the Illinois and Wisconsin region, and at least two trips within North America to PCI meetings outside of the region

Position description: This position serves as the primary technical representative of PCI responsible for processes to develop, review, and disseminate technical knowledge for the precast concrete industry and for specifying entities. As such, there will be an expectation to build the credibility of PCI as a technical institute through professional approaches to development and dissemination of technical information as well as relevant and visible participation in other organizations.

Specific Internal Responsibilities

Technical Activities Council: Advise and assist the council to maintain the credibility and consistency of technical information for the industry through strategic document development and critical, in-depth document review. Facilitate strategic prioritization of technical committee work.

Technical Committees: Act as staff liaison to, or assure adequate staff interaction with, technical committees to support the work of the committees in accordance with the Institute Strategic plan and Technical Activities Council priorities. Of importance is the development of an update to the PCI Design Handbook. Production deadlines must be met to assure coordination with milestones for code development.

Codes and Standards: Support and advise the Manager of Codes and Standards to assure strategic development of appropriate standards and to assure adherence to proper standards development processes as defined in the ANSI accredited PCI standardization process.  The work of the Manager of Codes and Standards will be limited to the development of the Precast Concrete Design Standard, processing PCI standards through the Standards Committee, and processing model code change proposals. Standards themselves, other than the Design Standard, will be developed by PCI technical committees. The management of codes consultants must be coordinated with the Manager of Codes and Standards.

Production Department: Work with the Director of Publications to provide technical support for processing technical documents including the PCI Journal, ASPIRE, and all technical documents developed in technical committee.

Research and Development Council: Advise and assist the Council to develop strategic direction for identifying research needs. Manage processes to execute research projects through universities and research agencies. Manage processes for review and dissemination of research project deliverables. Facilitate the work of the Innovation Committee to identify long term objective to benefit the precast concrete industry.

Operations: Develop and manage annual budgets for Technical Services, Publications, and Research. Respond to technical inquiries.

Specific External Responsibilities

ACI: There will be an expectation to become involved with ACI technical committees that may influence the precast concrete industry. This must be coordinated with the Manager of Codes and Standards to assure proper coverage of committees.

ASCE: As cycles allow, there will be an expectation to become involved with ASCE 7 and subcommittees that may influence the precast concrete industry.

BSSC: As necessary, there will be an expectation to monitor or participate in the activities of the Building Seismic Safety Council.

fib: As budget allows, there will be an expectation to monitor or participate in the activities of fib Commission 6 on precast concrete.

Qualifications

  • BS Engineering with structures emphasis; M.S. Engineering preferred
  • P.E. or S.E. required.
  • Minimum ten years’ experience working as a precast specialty engineer providing structural engineering services to precast concrete producers or working as an engineer for a Producer and being active on PCI Technical Committees, with an emphasis on non-transportation engineering and projects (parking structures, commercial, multi-story residential, institutional, etc.)
  • Demonstrated technical writing capability.
  • Demonstrated experience in research in precast concrete.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Experience working in the PCI technical committee structure.
