Internship and/or Full-time
Summary:
Wells Engineering Development Program (EDP) participants work directly with Wells PEs to gain valuable, hands-on experience in field services, quality control and engineering design. EDP participants will work through the program phases at their own pace. As you become proficient, you’ll progress to the next level or phase, exploring different opportunities and discover a career path that best meets your skills, ambitions and expertise.
Our program is for driven civil and structural engineering students or graduates looking to obtain the practical, written and communication skills needed for a successful career in engineering. During the program, participants will be able to prepare for their Professional Engineering (PE) exam, and to ultimately obtain a PE license.
Job Duties & Responsibilities:
The first portion of the Wells EDP will get you up to speed with quality control. This is one of the most important aspects of engineering with Wells. Our attention to detail and quality is what sets us apart from the competition.
- Shadow Quality Control (QC) tech at the plant
- Learn to perform physical test on concrete in the lab
- Get familiar with entering pre/post pour in Concrete Vision (CV), an internal production database
- Take and pass American Concrete Institute (ACI) field I Test
- Check forms during pre-pour
- Start to get familiar with mix designs, finishes, NCR’s, and metrics
- Take and pass Precast Concrete Institute (PCI) I/II
- Work proficiently with mix designs and finishes
- Pour samples
- Enter and use NCR/metrics to work on root cause and continuous improvement
- Conduct site visits when problems arise and determine root cause, then report to operations and help develop new processes, and procedures
- Work to develop new metrics to help with lowering NCR where needed
Once you complete the Quality Control phase, you’ll have the opportunity to work in our Field Services division.
- Shadow a senior field supervisor and assist in the layout process
- Read/interpret blue prints and communicate the work plan to crew
- Use survey equipment to ensure product is properly aligned vertically and horizontally
- Coordinate with dispatch daily for load times and sequence
- Supervise the installation process on job sites
- Troubleshoot problems that arise and help resolve them
- Write weekly progress reports
- Assist field operation managers with conducting early job site visits to coordinate start date, crane and truck access and project concerns with clients
- Source necessary construction equipment and materials to complete the project
- Coordinate shipping schedules, appropriate equipment and crew size needed for the project
- Coordinate daily job duties
- Coordinate mobilization to the next site efficiently and effectively
- Follow the bracing procedures and job specific plan on every project
- Support the laborers and operators at the project to complete tasks
The final portion of the Wells EDP consists of hands-on experience in engineering design. You’ll spend your final months working in tandem with Wells Design Engineers to design precast concrete products for a variety of projects, gaining valuable skills.
- Work with Wells Design Engineers to design precast concrete products for a variety of projects including FLEXURAL DESIGN (Hollowcore, Double Tees, and Beams), and wall panel design including load capacity and the wall panel handling.
- You’ll be prepared to take the PE exam and obtain your PE license.
