This position will work as a field and lab technician under the direct supervision of the Structures Lab Supervisor. This position will perform engineering construction inspections, sampling, and testing for major prestress/precast concrete structures, as well as minor precast items, such as concrete pipe, precast box culverts, MSE panels, retaining walls, manhole materials, etc.
The technician performs American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) and Arizona test methods and will work with various precast manufacturers to ensure project materials meet the project plans and specifications.
The technician will also inform the Supervisor or Manager of any materials issues or deficiencies found or witnessed during production. The technician will verify calibration of testing equipment and maintain project materials records. This position will maintain equipment and facilities.
Duties may require the technician to work weekends, holidays, and varied work hours, in all weather conditions. This position requires travel, including overnight and out of state.
Essential Job Duties & Responsibilities:
- Perform engineering construction inspection, sampling, and testing for major prestress/precast concrete structures. Daily decisions concerning material and quality of final products conform to plans and specifications.
- Sampling and testing using ASTM, AASHTO and/or Arizona test methods to determine compliance with applicable specifications.
- Perform engineering construction inspections, sampling, and testing for major prestress/precast concrete structures, as well as minor precast items, such as concrete pipe, precast box culverts, MSE panels, retaining walls, manhole materials, etc.
- Review plans and specifications.
- Notify supervisor of conflicts in contract documents for omissions, errors, and/or beneficial changes.
- Instruct and train employees.
- Maintain equipment and facilities. Use a state vehicle to drive to job sites and facilities.
- Other duties as assigned as related to the position.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required:
Knowledge:
- Engineering principles and practices related to duties assigned.

- Work safely in a construction area with cranes, ladders, travel lifts, and concrete delivery vehicles.
- Withstand extreme temperatures during inspections.
Licenses and Certifications:
- Selective Preference(s):
- Arizona Technical Testing Institute (ATTI) Soils and Aggregate certification, Prestress Concrete Institute QC/QA Level II certification, Post Tension Instate "Bonded" certification, National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET) Level II Concrete certification.

- This position requires driving or the use of a vehicle as an essential function of the job and the following requirements apply. Any employee operating a motor vehicle on State business must possess and retain a current, valid class-appropriate driver’s license, complete all required training, and successfully pass all necessary driver’s license record checks. The license must be current, unexpired, and neither revoked nor suspended. Employees who drive on state business are subject to driver’s license record checks, must maintain acceptable driving records, and must complete all required driver training. An employee who operates a personally owned vehicle on state business shall maintain the statutorily required liability insurance (see Arizona Administrative Code (A.A.C.) R2-10-207.11).
- American Concrete Institute (ACI) Concrete Strength Testing certification must be obtained within 12 months of hire.
- American Concrete Institute (ACI) Concrete Field Testing certification must be obtained within 12 months of hire.
- Arizona Technical Testing Institute (ATTI) Field certification must be obtained within 18 months of hire.
