Requirements

The purpose of this position is to be responsible for architectural and structural engineering services as required on prestressed/precast projects. Review and red-line drawings and specifications to determine the appropriate design and materials needed to achieve successful completion of projects. Job Title:  Design Engineer I Location: Grand Forks ND Department: Engineering and Drafting

 

General Description

Under oversight from Engineer II’s or the VP of Engineering and Drafting, the Design Engineer is responsible for the design of precast structures and managing the drafter(s) who are producing the plans for said precast structures. The Engineer I reports to the VP of Engineering and Drafting.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Answers questions regarding engineering issues.
  • Reviews Architectural/Structural plans and does required calculations to ensure structural integrity.
  • Manages drafter(s) preparing shop drawings/pour tickets.
  • Meet with Engineers/Architects/Owners as required.
  • Ensures safe structures, safe working conditions, quality products, quality service, and satisfied customers by working with all departments within the Company.
  • Provide sales staff with engineering support for prospect jobs.
  • Visits jobs during the erection process.
  • Follows up with the contractor regarding the progression of the project.
  • Overlooks shop drawings and other calculations.
  • Handles concerns and issues as necessary during any phase of the project.
  • Needs to make quick, educated decisions based on needs and requirements.
  • Prepares appropriate fixes for errors that have occurred on the projects.
  • Works with the customers and contractors during difficult stages of production of their product.
  • Overviews all facets of project from start to finish.
  • Complete special projects as requested and performs other duties as assigned.

  • Must have interpersonal communication skills to interact with co-workers, supervisors, and managers.
  • Experience with Microsoft office/design software. Ability to interact with customers in a professional manner.
  • Must be able to solve problems quickly and efficiently.
  • Ability to work with others to get the project completed efficiently.
  • Must be motivated and self-driven to complete a task.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering
  • 0 – 5 years-experience, with a preference in design engineering in the pre-cast industry

 

  • Moderate to high risk of exposure to unusual elements.
  • Moderate to high risk of safety precautions.
  • General Office Environment with a moderate to high exposure to jobsite environment.

General Summary of Position

Responsible for engineering services as required on assigned projects. Review and red-line blueprints and specifications to determine the appropriate design and materials needed to achieve successful completion of projects. Work closely with other company departments to promote a strong working relationship as well as develop and maintain relationships with external engineers, architects, contractors and vendors. Position requires acting as the Project Manager and possibly Sales on projects assigned by the Engineering Manager.

Essential Functions

  • Prepare structural and architectural designs and calculations for various standard and special products/projects
  • Provide component and connection designs as required
  • Verify all erection drawings and, when necessary, check production piece drawings
  • Verify accuracy, and correct as needed, the drawings prepared by Drafter
  • Review and verify drawings and designs prepared by outside consultants
  • Knowledge of the schedule for all phases of the project and follow-up with customers (internal and external) to make sure needs are met in a timely manner
  • Provide timely solutions to production facilities or customer as needed
  • Continuous education to stay abreast of Code changes, technology advancements and new products and techniques as they relate to the precast/prestress concrete industry
  • Provide design assistance and pricing to customers and sales as needed
  • Review final customer approved shop drawings and approve for production
  • Provide sales staff with preliminary design information
  • Comply with all company policies and procedures and safety requirements
  • Work full time, Monday through Friday with frequent Saturday work
  • Ability to meet attendance schedule with dependability and consistency
  • Contribute to company morale and group commitment to goals
  • Other duties as assigned by Supervision

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Concrete related experience, preferably in the precast industry
  • Ability to prepare structural designs and calculations for precast/prestress products
  • Ability to investigate and resolve production or customer problems in a timely manner
  • Ability to work at a faster than average pace with accuracy
  • Ability to read and interpret contract and shop drawings
  • Ability to review and redline shop drawings
  • Ability to interact with customers, jobsite and plant personnel and other engineers and architects to resolve engineering related issues
  • Understand, follow and transmit written and oral instructions
  • Ability to set and meet deadlines
  • Ability to work independently and complete daily activities according to work schedule
  • Ability to keep work areas clean and paperwork organized
  • Ability to train engineers of lesser experience on Gage Brothers standards

Education, Training and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or structural engineering degree from an accredited college, university or technical school.
  • Passed Engineer in Training Exam
  • Ability to obtain PE or SE within 4 years from employment start date

Work Context

  • Occasionally works near moving objects and in climate conditions that include inclement weather, heat and humidity, and exposure to dust and concrete.
  • Safety/steel toe boots, hard hat and safety glasses and hearing protection required when working in the plant.
  • Meets the following physical requirements: Lift up to five pounds regularly and up to 20 pounds occasionally. Work while sitting for extended periods of time. Frequently required to stand, walk on uneven surfaces, climb stairs or ladders and/or bend at the waist. Frequently work in an environment that may be hot, cold, noisy or dusty.
