The Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute (PCI) is accepting applications from students enrolled in structural, architectural, or civil engineering programs for a full-time paid internship to assist PCI staff with important technical projects. This individual will work with the PCI Technical Services team to support the extensive technical workload and will gain a unique experience advancing the institute’s body of knowledge.

Expected responsibilities will include:

  • Preparing engineering calculations for publications
  • Assisting in review and response to technical inquiries
  • Drafting figures and models for various publications
  • Preparing presentations with educational content

Qualified applicants are expected to be through their third year or later of bachelor’s degree curriculum and will have completed at least one course in reinforced concrete design, with prior coursework in prestressed concrete a plus.  Students between bachelor’s and master’s degree programs will be considered but should be planning to continue with their education full time after their internship to be considered.

This position will support staff at PCI headquarters in Chicago, IL; however, highly qualified remote location candidates will be considered and will not need to move.

Summary: This position is responsible for contributing to the improvement of safety, quality, delivery and cost for a large manufacturing and construction operation thorough applying engineering and lean manufacturing principles.

Essential Functions:

Principal Engineering Responsibilities

  • Analyze and evaluate manufacturing processes, systems, equipment, and materials in terms of their associated cost, time, safety, ergonomic, and quality and recommend solutions to improve.
  • Analysis of time studies, methods, process engineering, and plant layout to ensure balanced processes and implement process improvements for all gaps identified.
  • Troubleshooting and problem solving of production issues.
  • Participate in and lead continuous improvement projects focused on safety, quality, delivery, and cost.
  • Assist in the implementation of engineering changes to the product throughout the factory processes.
  • Design and coordinate the build of tools and fixtures to assist in the welding processes to improve efficiency and quality.
  • Prepare evaluations of, and justifications for, the procurement of new machines equipment and tool to improve safety, productivity, efficiency, and quality. 

Principal Safety Responsibilities

  • Assist in the development of comprehensive safety programs to prevent or correct unsafe work conditions in accordance with local, state and federal regulatory agencies.
  • Identify and correct potential hazards by inspecting facilities, machinery, and safety equipment.
  • Determines requirements for personal protective equipment and devices, and designs, builds, and installs, or directs installation of safety devices on machinery.
  • Conduct or coordinate safety and first aid training to educate employees about organizational safety policies and practices.
  • Investigate industrial accidents to minimize recurrence and prepares accident reports.
  • Relay information between management, outside safety agencies and employees, communicating vital information and instructions quickly and accurately.
  • Create documents and work instructions that outline all safety policies to be easily understood by manufacturing employees and management.
  • Coordinate and participate in 3rd party industrial hygiene air quality tests for presence of harmful dusts, gases and vapors.
  • Prepare and present safety and environmental data and status reports to company leadership and regulatory agencies.

Education Requirements, Required: B.S. degree in Engineering related field.

Certification/Licensure, Required: OSHA 10 & OSHA 30 HR Construction Certifications

Experience Requirements:

Preferred: Lean manufacturing experience.

Required: Experience in the concrete precast industry, manufacturing and construction industry is a plus. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Proficient with Microsoft, Word, Excel & PowerPoint.

JOB DESCRIPTION

EnCon is currently seeking a Chief Engineer.   Acting as the senior engineer, the successful applicant will be responsible for developing a training curriculum to advance new hires and existing design engineers.    The Chief Engineer is responsible for the maintenance and development of the design standards for all the EnCon manufacturing companies.   Design standards include forming constraints, design process and logic, code conformance and calculation package development.  In addition, the Chief Engineer will support the department management and throughput of design work while acting as a lead engineer on specific projects as required.

Technical Responsibilities include:

  • Develop and maintain the EnCon Design standards to ensure safe efficient design work references plant specific preferences and capabilities
  • Develop and maintain a training program specific to training prestressed and precast design practices specific to the EnCon Company market segments
  • Lead a design teams for the preparation of required design and details for specific projects assigned by Engineering Manager, while taking into account:
    • Compliance with building codes and project-specific design requirements
    • Meeting the project deadlines and ensuring design quality
    • Safe, efficient and economical production, stripping, transportation, installation, shoring and alignment of the product
    • Adherence to Company standards and procedures in design and detailing
    • Budget and material limitations of the project
  • Participate in project planning and execution by:
    • Review of construction documents in the preplanning phase to identify project scope, schedule, and design approach
    • Review of plans, details and specifications and provide interpretation. Identify deficiencies and assist with resolution
    • Maintaining project design and communication documentation for the duration of the job
  • Assist Engineering Manager in:
    • Preparation of design effort estimates, staffing schedules and assignments, and budget tracking
    • Coordination with manufacturing facilities to identify workload and schedules
    • Providing technical assistance to other departments as required
  • Report project and staff progress to Engineering Manager at regular intervals
  • Supervise and provide guidance as necessary to department and other employees as assigned

E.Construct is seeking a Structural Engineer for our Orlando, FL office to perform structural engineering design and analysis for architectural and structural precast concrete members (both conventionally reinforced and prestressed). Individuals will apply theoretical knowledge of structural and civil engineering concepts and principles, as well as experience working in the construction field, to perform the duties of the position.

Responsibilities include:

  • Prepare design calculations, reports and spreadsheets in accordance to applicable contract documents
  • Perform analysis related to stripping and rigging of precast concrete members.
  • Conduct Finite Element Analysis on precast concrete members.
  • Design and analyze connections and anchoring both for handling and erecting precast members.
  • Work with a multidiscipline team to ensure a coordinated design package.
  • Provide structural engineering support to sales and estimating as needed including reviewing drawings, preliminary design and technical support on sales calls.
  • Provide engineering support to quality control and erection processes.
  • Perform structural modeling using software.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or any related engineering field of study.
  • Three (3) years minimum experience in the job offered.
  • P.E. or S.E. license or ability to become licensed.
