The Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute (PCI) is accepting applications from students enrolled in structural, architectural, or civil engineering programs for a full-time paid internship to assist PCI staff with important technical projects. This individual will work with the PCI Technical Services team to support the extensive technical workload and will gain a unique experience advancing the institute’s body of knowledge.

Expected responsibilities will include:

  • Preparing engineering calculations for publications
  • Assisting in review and response to technical inquiries
  • Drafting figures and models for various publications
  • Preparing presentations with educational content

Qualified applicants are expected to be through their third year or later of bachelor’s degree curriculum and will have completed at least one course in reinforced concrete design, with prior coursework in prestressed concrete a plus.  Students between bachelor’s and master’s degree programs will be considered but should be planning to continue with their education full time after their internship to be considered.

This position will support staff at PCI headquarters in Chicago, IL; however, highly qualified remote location candidates will be considered and will not need to move.

The Production Engineering Associate position is a full-time position responsible for the production of precast deliverables including but not limited to erection drawings, piece tickets, advanced bill of materials, quantity take off and, hardware shop tickets. This position will use BIM software to achieve a high level of accuracy to avoid delay and conflict during the fabrication of panels. Achievement of responsibilities is accomplished through:


  • Create foundational trust based on the highest integrity and the dignity of every person
  • Facilitate project design process with architects / engineers/ project manager/ production
  • Ensure projects are completed on time in accord with the project schedule
  • Manage time appropriately to meet or beat hours allotted for project
  • Ensure effective communication and information regarding design or schedule issues that will affect goal achievement.
  • Maintain a strict commitment to adhering to the prescribed workflow for Non-Conformance Reports (NCR), Request for Engineering (RFE), Remedials and Revisions.


  • Review erection drawings
  • Review production schedule
  • Create production tickets that adhere to Bristol standards
  • Provide bill of material for assemblies and or entire project
  • Minor model adjustments required to correct ticket items
  • Review shop tickets for conformance with the erection drawings
  • Create and or revise specific details using Bristol standards
  • Consistently meet production schedule goals
  • Plant visits to observe production methods
  • Site visits to observe erecting methods
  • Communicate with the plant to help resolve production issues
  • Communication with the project manager to help resolve erecting issues

Success of the position is measured by:

  • Complete and accurate fabrication drawings with minimal field changes
  • Production engineering services delivered on time, as measured by schedule adherence
  • Accurate bills of materials, hardware shop tickets, pour sequence, bracing plans, etc.
  • Customer satisfaction

To perform this job successfully the employee must have the following:

  • A two-year degree in Engineering or related field
  • Experience with industry standard software, including Revit, Edge^Revit desired
  • Experience detailing with Revit.  Precast or Prestress detailing desired
  • The ability to communicate at a high level, both receiving and disseminating information for clear understanding
  • The ability to understand broad direction and execute plans to meet that direction
  • Willingness and ability to learn new skills
  • Attention to detail
  • Proficient in Windows based systems, such as Microsoft Office

The overall responsibilities of a Senior Design Engineer include:

  • Perform engineering calculations and details for all products and connections
  • Independently manage engineering design aspects of a project with minimal assistance or guidance
  • Check engineering design calculations and details of others – including external consultants/subcontractors - for accuracy, efficiency, and adherence to Metromont standards (except for laterals)
  • Complete repairs without assistance
  • Resolve engineering design issues independently (except for laterals)
  • Assist others with resolving engineering design issues (except for laterals)
  • Attend project meetings; may lead coordination meetings
  • Independently perform lateral design
  • Write and review requests for information (RFI)
  • Actively aware of production processes through regular plant visits
  • Evaluates design cost as compared to estimate and takes appropriate action

Technical requirements for this position include:

  • BS Civil Engineering required; structural emphasis preferred
  • PE Certification required
  • 4-8 years of relevant engineering experience; previous precast knowledge preferred
