Proj Overview

Project Overview

This project was completed in order to keep pace with rapidly increasing passenger volumes at this international airport. A total precast concrete structure was selected based on proven superior quality control and durability of the structure in a harsh climate, cost effectiveness, and the rapid production and erection times achievable to suit the fast-track project schedule.

Precast Solution

This open-air precast concrete parking structure is four parking bays wide with a footprint of 90,000 ft 2 (8000 m 2). The stairwells, stairs, elevator shaft, and lobby, as well as the two spiral ramps, are all constructed of precast concrete.

The same building team completed a precast concrete parking structure at the airport in 2001. However, the stair shafts and the external spiral ramps were constructed of cast-in-place concrete. The cast-in-place elements proved to be a hindrance to the overall schedule. For the new parking structure, precast stairs and spiral ramps were chosen by the design team and saved several months of construction time while proving to be a very successful and attractive element of the project.

Key Project Attributes

  • Using precast helped control costs, improved scheduling, and minimized impact on existing operations
  • Choosing an all-precast solution shortened the schedule to a mere 11/2 months and reduced disruptions
  • The flexibility and durability of precast proved to be a great choice to stand up to the wear and tear of a parking structure
