Proj Overview

Project Overview

To build on the reputation of its brands, including Bubblicious, Dentyne, Swedish Fish, Chiclets, and Halls cough drops, officials at confectioner Cadbury Adams USA LLC planned to erect a new Science & Technology Center.
The 148,000-square-foot facility houses laboratories where food engineers develop new products and conduct research.

Precast Solution

The design originally called for conventional brick-and-mortar construction for the exterior walls. But the design team ultimately opted for a CarbonCast Thermally Efficient Sandwich Wall Panel system from High Concrete Group LLC.
The panels eliminated the need for material and equipment storage—impossible with field-construction methods. Speedy erection allowed interior trades access sooner than other construction techniques could have allowed.
The project was completed two months ahead of schedule. This savings required the architect and High Concrete Group to work closely on the front end to engineer the panels to ensure efficiency of fabrication and proper aesthetics.

Key Project Attributes

  • Precast concrete panels provided fast erection time, allowing subcontractors quick access to enclosed interiors.
  • Insulated panels offer high energy efficiency without additional steps required for insulating interiors.
  • Two finishes provided in panels without additional field requirements needed.
  • Controlled fabrication at the precaster’s plant ensured high quality control and close tolerances to speed erection.
  • Enclosed production at plant eliminated any concerns over weather delays.

Project/Precast Scope

  • 148,000 square feet on two stories.
  • Two-story vertical precast concrete wall panels.
  • Panel sizes varied between 33 and 35 feet high and 10 to 12 feet wide.
  • Horizontal reveals with ribbed finish were cast to create textural finish.
  • Brick shelf angles were eliminated with the use of spandrel beams.
  • Punched windows were created in office areas.
