PROJECT OVERVIEW
Newark Liberty International Airport Consolidated Rental Car Facility (CONRAC) is a new 2.7 million square foot consolidated rent-a-car facility constructed on a 16.65-acre site, with over 2,700 public parking spaces and more than 3,300 rental car spaces to support 10 rent-a-car brands.
The precast concrete garage's design allows natural ventilation and incorporates solar panels inone centralized location. The design of the parking structure needed to support the weight of 12,708 solar panels covering 364,00 square feet and generating enough electricity to power 800 homes. Precast concrete was the best choice for the structure, because it can handle the weight of the largest single solar rooftop of any United States airport. The facility also features 150 electric vehicle chargers available for public use.
The garage is composed of 6,344 precast components including four helixes in the design. An exterior ramp connects the ready return and public parking as well as the quick turnaround portion of the garage. The ready return has approximately 5,000 parking spaces and the quick turnaround adds an additional 904 spaces.
ICONIC ONE-OF-A-KIND MURAL
A key architectural feature is the one-of-a-kind mural cast into four helix panels. Three out of the four helixes on this project utilized standard double tees that were stepped and angled along with a varying thickness cast in place topping slab to create a ramp. The fourth helix required a specialty pie shaped double tee due to the unique shape of the helix.
The artwork was commissioned to recognize and celebrate the complex and lively transportation activity that occurs at the Newark Liberty International Airport.
The mural form liners were designed and created by Architectural Polymers and depict all modes of transportation surrounding the face of The Statue of Liberty. The precast producer collaborated with the owner and a third-party artist to modify the mural artwork to work within the parameters for precast concrete. When the mural was completed, 86 individual liners were utilized to pour and create a mural that covers 19,000 square feet of exposed precast.
The structure incorporates retail operations with customer wayfinding and traffic circulation, providing vehicle fleet storage and enhanced security, including shared components such as 15 car washes and 54 fueling positions along with vacuum systems, waste management and service bays. |
