PROJECT OVERVIEW
When a new chimpanzee exhibit was being considered at the Indianapolis Zoo, the client needed a versatile and efficient building for this unique application and requirements. The exhibit consists of three areas for zoo guests to interact with the chimpanzees. The arena, the cognition building, and the main entrance. A home for up to 30 chimpanzees, the exhibit recreates important aspects of a chimpanzee’s natural habitat.
CHIMPANZEE DURABLE! PRECAST SOLUTION
Precast provided a cost effective, durable, and aesthetically pleasing solution. By nature, chimpanzees are curious creatures and tend to dig when they find an opening. Precast panels allowed for a smooth back finish free of imperfections so that the chimpanzees could not create any damage to the exhibit. It was also important to ensure that the chimpanzees could be active; using precast concrete allowed anchors to be installed in ceiling panels that swing.
The building envelope was erected quickly so that normal zoo operations could continue with minimal disruption. While the back of the panels have a smooth finish, a form liner was used on the front of the panels for contrast and texture. The client required the new exhibit to be easily integrated into the existing zoo grounds. Precast was able to do this with a textured form liner exterior finish and the use of steel accents that coordinate with other surroundings at the zoo.
The project team designed and built a strong, sustainable structure. The zoo has a commitment to selecting energy efficient, responsible building materials. The design allows for maximum daylight within the chimpanzee rooms and holding areas. A conservation approach for design was also a factor in choosing precast concrete. |
