The Honolulu headquarters for IBM is distinguished by the honeycomb structure of its precast concrete brise soleil, which consists of 1360 pieces of precast concrete and was inspired by Polynesian culture. This unique feature was also intended to resemble punch cards that were used in the computer industry at the time. While serving these symbolic functions elegantly, the brise soleil also shades the building’s interior from the tropical sunlight without blocking natural light and views, thus reducing energy loads.
“When the right design meets a material that can stand proud and perform over decades, you get an iconic structure like this,” says Schneider. “The design is respectful of local Polynesian culture and utilizes the precast honeycomb structure to offer a contextual frame that strikes a balance between island history and the technological nature of IBM.” |
