The Pittsburg Middle School addition had three main elements to the project. It had three functions designed into the spaces, a brick veneer on the outside along with sandblasted concrete and the interior finish was exposed as well.
Three distinct spaces were built, with all of the exterior walls and some interior walls being precast. The spaces include a 7,000 square foot safe room that also doubled as locker rooms, as well as a 7,000 square foot weight-lifting area and a 13,000 square foot gymnasium
Approximately 5,000 square feet of thin brick veneer was placed on the building’s exterior in select areas to help highlight entry ways and create accent on the structure. The remaining concrete on the outside was then sandblasted. On the interior corridors and in the gymnasium, the exposed concrete was sandblasted.
Precast was used on this project to achieve the safe room for the school district. It was also used because of its resiliency and minimal maintenance needed.
This project included 124 precast concrete pieces with 101 of them being insulated.
