Project Overview

The 101 Cordilleras Creek Bridge Replacement project has successfully transformed a vital stretch of U.S. 101 in Redwood City, San Mateo County. This ambitious project replaced an aging, outdated triple box culvert with a modern, single-span precast concrete voided slab bridge, enhancing both safety and efficiency for travelers. By implementing an Accelerated Bridge Construction (ABC) process, the project was completed in just one summer season - half the time of a traditional two-year bridge replacement. To minimize traffic disruption, the team strategically utilized two 55-hour closures, one for each direction of travel, ensuring the swift replacement of the bridge while keeping commuters moving smoothly.

Precast Solution

The Cordilleras Creek Bridge replacement exemplifies the efficiency and precision of precast concrete solutions. At the heart of the project were 45 precast/prestressed voided slabs, each meticulously manufactured and installed to form the new single-span bridge. The work was completed over two 55-hour weekend closures - 21 slabs were installed during the southbound closure, and 24 slabs followed two weeks later for the northbound direction. This innovative solution allowed the bridge to be replaced strategically, minimizing traffic disruptions along the bustling U.S. 101 corridor.

The slabs produced by Kie-Con at their Antioch facility over five weeks were the result of close collaboration between the project's prime contractor, Myers & Sons and Caltrans. Together, they optimized the casting schedule and installation plan to ensure seamless execution. Once fabricated, the slabs were transported to the site by Reeve Trucking Co. and installed with precision by the erecting company. These critical partners played a pivotal role in delivering and placing the slabs safely and on time, enabling the project team to exceed expectations, reopening the southbound closure 9 hours ahead of schedule and the northbound closure an impressive 15 hours early.

This teamwork and attention to detail ensured the project's success, allowing the new bridge to open to traffic ahead of schedule. Kie-Con values the opportunity to contribute to innovative projects like this, showcasing the reliability and versatility of precast concrete solutions. The project stands as a testament to the power of innovative and efficient construction techniques, ensuring a stronger, safer bridge for decades to come.
