Proj Overview
The mission of the Kids Can Community Center is to educate, engage, and inspire children through early childhood care and out-of-school experiences. The new community center is key to making the mission a reality. The almost 27,000 square-foot facility has two infant rooms, four toddler classrooms, a cafeteria that doubles as a community meeting space, and three out-of-school classrooms that include a STEM room and a full-court gym.

Precast concrete was chosen for the construction of the community center because it enabled the project to be completed quickly even with erection taking place in the winter months. Precast’s durability also played a role in its selection for the project. A bonus was the ease with which a storm shelter could be incorporated using precast concrete.

For this project, Coreslab Structures (Omaha) Inc. produced 45 insulated precast concrete wall panels with three inches of extruded insulation ranging from 12” in the classrooms to 14” in the gymnasium. The wall panels have a grey sandblasted finish. Coreslab Structures (Omaha) Inc. also produced twelve double tees with 4” flanges that were incorporated into the community center’s storm shelter.
