A Total Precast Solution for Large Scale Data Centers
When NTT Global Data Centers Americas, one of the world’s preeminent designers, builders, and operators of mission critical data centers, wanted to expand their 78-acre Ashburn Data Center Campus by adding a second facility, Tindall provided the engineering horsepower needed to bring their vision to life. The owner’s goal was to develop a two-story, 250,000-square-foot data center with 32 megawatts of power to join the existing VA3 Data Center. The challenge? Deliver a total precast solution that could meet an aggressive deadline while providing the performance needed to live up to NTT Global Data Centers Americas’s legacy of data center excellence.
The Proof is in the Precast
The owner began designing the structure’s total precast template early on. By working closely with the design team, Tindall’s engineers helped create the layout for the corridors, office configurations, and column spacing in the data hall. Tindall also developed a strategy for completing the structure in segments, allowing other trades to access the completed data hall as Tindall moved on to the next section. This strategy set the project up for success, enabling swift and efficient production and erection processes, and it even empowered the owner to lease space faster, increasing the value of the total precast system.
Bringing the VA4 Data Center to life required careful consideration of the necessary long, clear spans. To meet this requirement, Tindall produced over 1,600 precast components, including 48” double tees, walls, beams, and columns — over 516,000 square feet of coverage in total. The result? An ideal total precast solution capable of supporting up to 350 PSF of floor loading while offering maximum floor space. NTT Global Data Centers Americas was so pleased with the strategy and execution of this project that Tindall was entrusted with developing the campus’s next data center, VA5.
