The Army and Air Forces Exchange Service (AAFES) is expanding to keep up with demand. Since September 11, 2001 Fort Drum has been on the forefront of our war on terrorism. The post has since expanded by adding more than 6,000 soldiers. The PX (Post Exchange) expansion has been one of their bigger projects doubling the size of the existing store.
The project featured a thin brick cast into the precast concrete wall panel system. The two colors of thin brick were selected to match the vernacular of the existing structure and preserve the aesthetic of the setting. The speed of construction, all-weather erection, tight dimensional tolerances, durability, energy efficiency and sustainability of precast concrete all fit into the Army s job requirements.
Oldcastle Precast Building Systems manufactured 88 pieces for a total of 26,000 square feet of exterior, load-bearing wall panels. The insulated panels were 10-inches thick and used CarbonCast® shear grid to achieve a steady state R-value of 20.
