Call for Papers for 2022 PCI Convention

PCI is accepting abstracts for technical papers to be presented at the 2022 PCI Convention and National Bridge Conference, held March 1-5, 2022, in Kansas City, Mo. The Call for Papers offers the exchange of ideas and information on precast concrete design, fabrication, and construction.

Invited papers will be peer-reviewed and accepted papers will be published in the proceedings. Email technical@pci.org with questions or to submit abstracts no later than August 1, 2021.

ESR for Fire Resistance Renewed

PCI has renewed ESR-1997, Design of Fire-Resistive Construction for Precast/Prestressed Concrete, Using the Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute (PCI) Third Edition Manual MNL 124-11

While we have published PCI 124-18, Specification for Fire Resistance of Precast/Prestressed Concrete, since the original publication of ESR-1997, PCI 124 has only been adopted by the 2021 International Building Code.

Awards Call for Nominations

Norman L. Scott Professional Engineer Award

The Norman L. Scott Professional Engineer Award recognizes professional engineers who have made significant contributions to PCI, ACI, the precast concrete industry, and the engineering profession at large and who have exhibited the personal and professional attributes that Norm Scott exemplified in being a role model and inspiration to all engineers.

The award will be presented at the 2021 PCI Committee Days and Technical Conference, September 22–25, 2021. Nominations must be submitted by June 25, 2021.

Irwin J. Speyer Young Professional Engineer Award

The Irwin J. Speyer Young Professional Engineer Award recognizes professional engineers who have made significant contributions to PCI, the precast concrete industry, and the engineering profession at large during their early careers and who demonstrate their intent to continue serving the precast concrete industry as Irwin did for his entire career.

The award will be presented at the 2021 PCI Committee Days and Technical Conference, September 22–25, 2021.  Nominations must be submitted by June 25, 2021.

Research Partners Seek Producer Input

Several PCI Research and Development Council sponsored research projects seek input regarding typical practices. Research project topics seeking input include the following:

Girder Handling and Transportation

This R&D project is intended to: (1) clearly quantify transport vehicle stability analysis parameters, most importantly rotational stiffness; and (2) define a protocol for specifying and verifying those parameters for contracting. Because the outcome of this project will affect many of you who handle long precast prestressed concrete girders, PCI strongly encourages your participation.

Dapped End Research Extension

This R&D Project seeks additional background information for PCI’s Double Tee Stem Dapped End Research Extension.  The survey pertains to dapped double tees of the type used in parking structures as well as deeper double tees used in data centers and similar commercial structures. The questionnaire is intended to be completed by engineers for the precasters familiar with typical dapped details and bar bending practices.

Precast Insulated Wall Panels

This Jenny Fellowship seeks input for the development of alternate strength reduction factors (to complement - not replace - those already specified in ACI 318-19) for precast insulated wall panels. Survey is soliciting more specific information regarding insulated wall panel analysis/design methods, types of wythe connectors and concrete cross-sections most commonly used, failure modes of damaged precast insulated wall panels (if any observed).
