Online Academy: Advanced Prestressed Design

This course is specific to needs of the Precast / Prestressed Concrete industry. This course presents advanced design topics of precast/prestressed components based on information presented in Chapter 5 of the 8th Edition PCI Design Handbook. This course builds on the concepts introduced in the Basic Prestressed Concrete Design series offered by PCI earlier this year. This 6-part online series will present the background and details of provisions for design precast/prestressed components including torsion, dapped end design, ledge design, corbel design, design of compression members, and detailing of beam openings.

After completing this series, participants should:

  •  Understand the background of torsion design provisions in the PCI Design Handbook and be able to apply equations for torsion design contained in the PCI Design Handbook.
  • Learn the basis for the design method used in the PCI Design Handbook and be able to apply design procedures specific to ledges to avoid failure.
  • Comprehend the load transfer characteristics of dapped ends and application of design procedures specific to dapped ends with an emphasis on proper detailing for adequate performance.
  • Understand what P-M Interaction diagrams represent and the influence of different factors of compression members that affect P-M interaction diagrams.
  • Learn the background of strut-and-tie models and be able to construct strut-and-tie models and design corbels using these models.
  • Learn how to design double tee flanges under transverse bending and understand how to treat uniformly applied loads and point loads for transverse design of double tee flanges.

Classes will be held on August 29; September 5, 12, 19; October 3 and end on the 10th
from 5:00 pm to 6:30 pm CT.  Each class will be hosted online allowing you to access the content from the comfort of your home, office, hotel room, or anyplace with an internet connection!  Recordings of each class will be made available to all registered attendees in case of absence or if you'd like to review the content.

Technical Requirements

All courses for the PCI Online Academy will run via the GoToTraining.com software. To participate fully in the course, participants will need internet access.

IMPORTANT: You will receive an email from customercare@gototraining.com within 24 hours. This email contains the link you will need to join the online training session. If you don’t receive it, please be sure to check your spam folder and contact bmissaggia@pci.org immediately so we can provide the link for you.

Academy Presenter

The presenter for this Academy is Dr. Sergio Breña, a Professor and Associate Department Head of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. He has over 25 years of experience in laboratory and field testing of structures and structural systems and over six years of structural design experience.

He is a member of several professional organizations including ASCE, the American Concrete Institute (ACI), the Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute (PCI), and the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute (EERI).

He currently serves as a voting member of ACI Building Code subcommittees ACI 318-C - Safety, Serviceability, and Analysis and ACI 318-H – Seismic Provisions, PCI’s Design Standard Committee and Industry Handbook Committee. He is also a voting member of various technical committees including ACI 369 - Seismic Repair and Rehabilitation (chair of ACI 369F – Retrofit), and ACI 374 - Performance Based Seismic Design of Concrete Buildings.
