TRAVELING TO VERMONT
Wondering what rules to follow if you visit Vermont? Or, if you’re in Vermont and planning a trip out of state, what to do when you come home?
If you are thinking about travel, you may need to quarantine to help prevent the spread of COVID-19 in our state. Follow the guidance on this page to find out what you need to do.

WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT QUARANTINE?
Quarantine is for people with no symptoms who are coming to Vermont from certain out-of-state locations. Quarantine helps prevent spread of disease before a person knows they are sick or if they are infected with the virus and don’t have symptoms. Quarantine means staying at a home or dwelling for 14 days before doing any activities outside of the home, like grocery shopping or getting together with friends or family. People in quarantine should separate themselves from others and check themselves for symptoms.

For people who are coming to Vermont from another state, overnight stays in lodging, camping and short-term rental properties are allowed as described below.

When you arrive at the lodging site, you and anyone traveling with you must self-certify(link is external) that you meet one of these conditions:

  1. Have traveled from a region with a low rate of active cases(link is external) OR
  2. Have completed a 14-day quarantine in your home state and traveled directly to Vermont in a personal vehicle OR
  3. Have had a negative test result in your home state on or after 7 days of quarantine OR
  4. Are authorized to work in Vermont

And you must also meet both of these conditions:

  1. Not had close contact with someone with COVID-19 in the past 14 days AND
  2. Not had COVID-19-like symptoms in the past 24 hours.

Travelers also have the option to quarantine in a Vermont lodging site. Travelers may complete either a 14-day quarantine OR a 7-day quarantine followed by a negative test in Vermont. This applies regardless of where someone began their trip, or what type of transportation they used. Travelers must stay in their quarantine location for the duration of quarantine, other than to travel to and from a test site.

CROSS STATE TRAVEL INFORMATION

Leisure Travel

The State of Vermont has determined that any county with less than 400 active cases of COVID-19 per one million residents is now eligible for quarantine-free leisure travel. The Agency will update the map below each Friday identifying quarantine and non-quarantine counties throughout the Northeast including New England; New York; Pennsylvania; Ohio; New Jersey; Delaware; Maryland; Washington, D.C.; Virginia; and West Virginia.

The State hopes more counties will be added over time as their active case counts improve and that the criteria may be expanded beyond 400 cases per million as circumstances allow.

This map is populated with raw data from Johns Hopkins University and uses multiple factors to determine how many active cases are in each county. Read the complete methodology for how active cases per million residents is being calculated. The aggregated data by county is also available.

Non-Vermont Residents

  • Residents of other states who live in counties across the Northeast including New England; New York; Pennsylvania; Ohio; New Jersey; Delaware; Maryland; Washington, D.C.; Virginia; and West Virginia that have a similar active COVID-19 caseload to Vermont (defined as less than 400 active cases per million) may enter the state for leisure travel without quarantining if they do so in a personal vehicle.
  • Residents of other states who live in a quarantine county or are from any other state outside of the Northeast (including New England; New York; Pennsylvania; Ohio; New Jersey; Delaware; Maryland; Washington, D.C.; Virginia; and West Virginia), must follow quarantine guidelines:
  • Travelers arriving to Vermont in a personal vehicle, may complete either a 14-day quarantine or a 7-day quarantine followed by a negative test in their home state and enter Vermont without further quarantine restrictions.
  • Travelers arriving to Vermont via public transportation (plane, train, bus) or from further than a direct car ride would allow may complete either a 14-day quarantine or a 7-day quarantine followed by a negative test in a Vermont lodging establishment or with friends and family (travelers must stay in their quarantine location for the duration of quarantine other than to travel to and from a test site).
  • Read more about quarantining at the Vermont Department of Health website.
  • All out of state travelers utilizing lodging, camping and short-term rental properties in Vermont must sign and complete a Certificate of Compliance or affirm a compliance statement via a digital check box at the time of reservation and check-in to attest that they meet the quarantine requirement, have traveled from a county with similar active COVID-19 caseload per the Vermont Agency of Commerce and Community Development, or are an essential/authorized worker.
  • All out of state travelers are strongly encouraged to register with Sara Alert upon arrival to Vermont to get two weeks of daily reminders to check for common symptoms of COVID-19.
