Thursday, February 6: 8:00 a.m. – 9:30 a.m.
Room:
CC, 136
Speaker:
Daniel Keymer, Faculty, University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point
In 2008, NPCA started down a path to learn as much as possible about microbially induced concrete corrosion (MICC). Since then, three research projects have been completed. This recently completed project was a field study of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) gas movement through a septic system. During this session, principal researchers Dr. Daniel Keymer and Kevin Stange will share their experience and conclusions from this field study. They will discuss how simple changes to venting or other components of a septic system can heavily influence the accumulation of H2S gas and consequently, lower the risk for MICC. This session will provide valuable information for QC personnel, plant management and sales staff to preserve precast concrete’s durability.
Thursday, February 6: 10:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.
Room:
CC, 143
Presenter:
Steve Smart, Technical Resource Engineer, County Materials Corp.
Effective communication between the precast supplier and project representatives is a fundamental key to the success of a project, strong relationships and long-term company growth. During the project, issues can arise that will demand quick action. Examples include a sanitary manhole with the wrong size gasket, a utility vault damaged by site equipment, or a shipment needed sooner than anticipated, as in tomorrow! The issue could be blamed on the supplier, the owner, the contractor or the weather; however, that is of little importance when compared to how the supplier handles the situation. Steve Smart, Technical Resources Engineer with County Materials, has been dealing with project stakeholders for more than 30 years. He has experienced every type of issue one could imagine, and he will share his acquired wisdom. He will discuss how to effectively deal with an on-site challenge by being prepared and remedying the issue professionally and expeditiously. He will share strategies to deescalate any tensions and come to the table with a possible fix in mind. He also will discuss how to preemptively ease the process of dealing with those pop-up issues by getting to know the key project and site personnel early on, earning their trust and respect to become a valued partner throughout construction.
Tuesday, February 6: 10:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.
Room:
CC, 136
Presenter:
G. Terry Harris, Senior Director of Technical Services & Ductilcrete Slab Systems - North America, Chryso
The pace of change in concrete materials has accelerated over the last decade and we are now using various types of cements and supplementary cementitious materials that we hadn’t heard of just a few years ago. Many offer distinct advantages, but can bring some challenges to the precast producer. Others offer little in the way of performance advantages while presenting many challenges. In this session we will examine various materials and how best to use them in the concrete mix.
Friday, February 7: 8:00 a.m. – 9:30 a.m.
Room:
CC, 143
Presenters:
Hugh Martin, Director of Technical Resources, National Precast Concrete Association
“Measure twice, cut once” is a well-known adage in construction that emphasizes the importance of careful planning before taking action. The same applies to the production of precast concrete, pointing out the value of careful preparation and attention to detail. Join us for an engaging and informative presentation for designers who want to enhance their skills in creating effective shop drawings. In this course, attendees will gain valuable insights and practical tips to enhance their drawing skills, increasing the quality and effectiveness of shop drawings to meet both the requirements for fabrication and the project requirements. Whether you are a seasoned professional or new to precast, this session will be a valuable addition to your workplace skillset.
