A four-year Precast Design Studio at the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT).  The Concrete Industry Management (CIM) program was developed in 1996 at Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU). Since then, the program has expanded to the New Jersey Institute of Technology, California State University – Chico, and Texas State University. Prior to this grant, most students graduating from the CIM program at NJIT found employment with ready mix producers as they had little exposure to precast and prestressed concrete materials and methods in the CIM curriculum.

“The Concrete Industry Management program is designed to train and educate students about the concrete industry.  It is a 4-year Bachelor of Science degree program focusing on science, technology, management, and production. The CIM program has 100% graduate job placement.

This new PCI Foundation studio will add new coursework to the current curriculum and introduce feasible, sustainable, and economical precast systems through new courses and a joint effort between industry and academia.

Students will have hand-on learning through guest speakers, producer plant tours and visits to real world precast concrete projects.  This will increase the university’s awareness to the precast concrete industry and attract more students to the program in the future.  It will also lead to a meaningful industry engagement to expose students to prospective employers.” – Professor Mohamed Mahgoub

Through close collaboration and input from industry partners, the School of Engineering and Applied Technology at the New Jersey Institute of Technology implemented 3 new required courses and 3 new elective courses that are integrated into the CIM program and NJIT Hillier College of Architecture and Design. Approximately 300 students from five majors (4 engineering majors of the 10 offered at NJIT) attend precast courses over their 4-year degreed program starting in the fall semester of 2021.
