Project Overview - Enduring Resilience
Rising 32 stories above downtown San Diego, the Omni San Diego Hotel is a four-diamond luxury destination that blends timeless architecture with coastal sophistication. Completed in 2004, this 375-foot high-rise features 511 elegantly appointed guest rooms and 37 luxury condominiums on its upper floors, offering panoramic views of the bay and skyline. Its enviable location places it directly across from the San Diego Convention Center and uniquely connected to Petco Park via a dramatic 80-foot skybridge—the first pedestrian bridge in North America to directly link a hotel to a Major League Baseball stadium.
Designed by Hornberger + Worstell, the building offers more than just accommodations. Guests enjoy over 27,000 square feet of event space, a sixth-floor outdoor terrace with pool, and proximity to San Diego’s vibrant Gaslamp Quarter. In 2024, the hotel underwent a full interior renovation by Jeffrey Beers International, refreshing its spaces while maintaining the architectural integrity that makes it a standout in the city skyline.
Precast Solution
The Omni San Diego Hotel in San Diego, California showcases the powerful union of precast concrete and curtainwall glass, combining modern aesthetics with long-term durability. Architectural precast panels fabricated by Coreslab Structures (L.A.), Inc. were used throughout the tower, forming the buildings's vertical rhythm and enhancing its coastal-modern identity.
Precast concrete was chosen for its proven performance in seismic zones, resistance to coastal environmental conditions, and ability to be manufactured offsite for accelerated construction schedules. The panels were precisely engineered to integrate seamlessly with the glass facade offering both visual continuity and structural efficiency.
The use of precast concrete played a vital role in achieving the project's key objectives. The panels contributed significantly to the building’s clean, geometric lines and timeless architectural expression, enhancing its modern coastal aesthetic. Additionally, the precast elements allowed for rapid installation, which minimized disruptions in the bustling downtown corridor and helped keep the construction schedule on track. Over the past two decades, the façade has proven its long-term performance, remaining visually striking and requiring minimal maintenance despite exposure to the coastal climate and urban environment.
This project exemplifies how precast concrete can elevate architectural design while delivering lasting value in high-profile, high-traffic urban developments. |
