Lecture - An Introduction to Precast Prestressed Concrete for Engineering Classes

Introduce the fundamentals of precast and prestressed concrete technology and explore material properties, aesthetics, design and applications.

Describe what is prestressed concrete and how it is different from reinforced concrete design. Discuss the manufacturing process and how building and bridges are built with this technique.  Examples of precast structures from fabrication to installation will be shown.

Precast Topics:
Basics of Prestressed Concrete Design
Fabrication Process
Installation Techniques
Case Studies of Precast Building and Bridge Projects
  • Buildings - Offices, Housing, many Specialty Applications
  • Infrastructure - Piling, Piers, Water Treatment and Specialty Applications
  • Bridges - Small to Major Bridge Crossings
Length - 45 minutes to 1.0 Hour (Length adjusted to school need)

Lecture - An Introduction to Precast Concrete for Architectural Schools

Introduce the fundamentals of precast and prestressed concrete technology and explore material properties, aesthetics, environmental impact, and performance.

Describe what is prestressed concrete and how it is different from reinforced concrete design. Discuss the manufacturing process and how buildings are built with this technique. Describe how Architectural Precast panels serve as a barrier between the outside environment and conditioned space, but also as a part of the aesthetic expression for the structure. It will provide an overview of the finishes available with architectural precast concrete, along with combining multiple finishes into a single panel, using veneers, embedded materials, textures, and custom mix designs to achieve a variety of colors. Examples of precast structures from fabrication to installation will be shown.

Precast Topics:
Basics of Precast Concrete Design
Fabrication Process
Installation Techniques
Methods to achieve color, form, and texture.
