NEXT Beam: A Solution to Todays Aging Bridges8/19/2021The Northeast Extreme Tee (NEXT) beam was developed in 2008 by the PCI Northeast Bridge Technical Committee, which is made up of DOTs, engineers, and industry representatives. The NEXT beam offers significant advantages over typical stringer-beam or adjacent beam bridges by providing a fast construction option for variable-width bridges with spans up to 85 ft. The top flange of the beam can be designed as the deck or designed to support the weight of a cast-in-place concrete deck. This webinar will include the background, development and applications for the NEXT beam. Also included will be a several case studies. The Precasters preceptive will discuss fabrication process and challenges, in addition to overall lessons learned.WEB210819

Efficient & Low-Impact Rehabilitation Using Precast Slabs3/25/2021Webinar: Efficient and Low-Impact Rehabilitation Using Precast-Prestressed Concrete Replacement Slabs. Rapid construction, minimal impact to the public and low life cycle costs are quickly becoming common themes among Departments of Transportation across America. Precast Concrete Pavement replacement slabs have been successfully implemented in several states across the country and in fact, the technology has spread overseas to at least seven countries. Adding prestressing strand to the concrete slab increases the benefit this technology can provide to the designer. In this presentation, participants will be introduced to the uses and benefits of Precast Concrete Pavement replacement slabs with an emphasis on prestressing. Recent projects in Mobile, AL and Los Angeles, CA will be highlighted.WEB210325

It will explore collaboration of design and construction teams and the advantages of technology-based BIM, CNC and module-based forming for mold fabrication. Case studies will include: The Perot Museum of Nature and Science with interviews from the design team reflecting on the design-assist collaboration of this iconic structure; and, One South First, a unique project on the former Domino Sugar manufacturing site in Brooklyn, NY – with collaboration from the architect, developer and precast fabricator - to use research from PCI and Oak Ridge National Laboratory to employ 3-D printed molds and wood forming techniques for the project’s nearly 100 windows, to meet the architects vision, schedule and budgetary requirements.WEB210225
Webinar: Ultra-High-Performance Concrete - A Game Changer2/18/2021Ultra-high-performance concrete: A game changer in the precast concrete industry. Ultra-High-Performance Concrete (UHPC) has the potential to replace conventional concrete in many large-scale applications. UHPC has the ability to be cost-competitive on a first-cost basis while being far more valuable than conventional concrete on a life-cycle basis. By taking advantage of the key properties of UHPC, building and bridge members will use materials more efficiently while also being able to span farther, improving space utilization and enhancing the safety of people and vehicles. Lower consumption of construction materials will be good for the environment because of its potential to reduce carbon dioxide emissions.WEB210218

Better Design Through Embodied Carbon with Precast Concrete12/3/2020Now that architects have a good understanding of environmental impacts related to energy use, the next design frontier in tackling climate change is reducing the embodied carbon in buildings. This webinar will focus on best practices for determining the embodied carbon in a building, including credible sources for embodied carbon data. It will introduce common practices and misconceptions about comparisons of embodied carbon. A case study will be presented that highlights how design decisions may be influenced when comparing among up-front carbon, use-phase carbon, or whole-life carbon. The presentation will highlight existing tools related to quantifying embodied carbon.WEB201203
Webinar: High Performance Building Enclosure Systems11/5/2020A structure’s envelope has considerable impact on its overall performance, as highlighted by recent code changes. The envelope not only serves as a barrier between the outside environment and conditioned space, but also as a part of the aesthetic expression for the structure. It must also serve as a protective shield against environmental forces. High-performance building envelopes can help reduce the overall energy consumption of a structure throughout the structure’s life, and maintain and protect its interior environment and occupants.WEB201105
