PCI Ultra-High-Performance Concrete Workshop

This one-day workshop will gather experts from across the precast concrete industry to discuss various research and development initiatives for the implementation of ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC) in precast concrete components.

The event will cover design considerations for architectural and structural precast UHPC components, such as UHPC material selection for nonproprietary mixture designs, characterization and quality control testing of UHPC, and production and fabrication of precast UHPC components. Includes continental breakfast and lunch. Register for the UHPC workshop through the PCI Committee Days event site.

Title: PCI UHPC Mixture Development, Materials Guidelines, and Guide Specification
Synopsis: A key goal of the PCI UHPC research project was to promote implementation of UHPC by providing tools to address the materials challenges that have prevented more widespread use, including the high cost of proprietary UHPC materials, the need for production expertise and experience, and the varied and sometimes inconsistent requirements for UHPC materials performance. The tools that were prepared as part of this research effort consist of: 1) guidelines for developing and producing cost-effective, non-proprietary UHPC mixtures and 2) a guide specification for UHPC materials qualification and acceptance. These documents were refined and their applicability verified through the completion of a program that included the development and/or characterization of UHPC mixtures based on materials local to six different precasters and the ¸production of component specimens used for the structural testing conducted as part of this project. This presentation will describe the materials research effort, and discuss lessons learned and best practices for implementing UHPC in precast production facilities

Title: Fire Resistance of Ultra-High-Performance Concrete Beams and Girders
Synopsis: The presentation will focus on the application of advanced analysis approach for evaluating fire resistance of typical UHPC precast beams and girders, used in building and bridge applications. The development of a non-liner finite-element based numerical model for tracing the response of a UHPC girder (or beam) under the combined effects of structural loading and transient fire exposure will be presented. The techniques to be adopted for incorporating the full effects of transient fire exposure, temperature dependent properties of UHPC and reinforcing steel, fire induced spalling, and different failure limit states, in fire resistance analysis will be outlined. The evolution of temperature-induced instability, leading to failure of an UHPC beams and girders will be discussed. Results from a set of case studies will be utilized to illustrate the critical factors governing the fire resistance of UHPC girders and beams.

Title: Structural Behavior of Axial and Seismic UHPC Columns
Synopsis: This presentation provides an overview of experimental testing of a total of 13 large-scale full UHPC columns that were tested under different loading conditions to comprehensively investigate the effect of different variables on the structural behavior and strength of UHPC columns. This experimental investigation aimed at providing the knowledge needed to optimize the design of UHPC columns under different types of loading. It also aimed at contributing to the design codes and guidelines by conducting re-evaluation of the existing provisions in estimating the columns axial strength (i.e., short and long columns) and by providing recommendations for the design of the UHPC columns. The tests included four reduced-scale UHPC columns that were tested at UNR under combined axial and cyclic lateral loading, and nine full-scale slender UHPC columns that were tested at a 4-million ln machine at UC Berkeley under pure axial loading

Title: Evaluation of Test Methods to Characterize Tensile Strength Of UHPC
Synopsis: Several testing methods exist in the literature to evaluate the tensile strength of fiberreinforced concrete, but there is still a lack of agreement on which method is most suitable for UHPC. This presentation presents the experimental study results comparing three different test methods to estimate and evaluate the tensile response of UHPC. A standard commercial UHPC mix was used in this study.

Title: UHPC Tensile Strength Testing Options
Synopsis: Unlike conventional concrete, UHPC allows designers to take advantage of high tensile strength and ductility in structural designs. There are several different tensile strength test methods available to measure UHPC tensile strength with varying levels of complexity. This presentation will describe the direct tension test method, ASTM C1609 flexural test, and a simplified double punch test, present the correlation between test methods, and give recommendations on when each test method might be appropriate to use.

Title: Mechanical characterization and strength maturity assessment of ABC-UTC non-proprietary UHPC
Synopsis: Recently, a new non-proprietary UHPC mix for ABC connections has been developed through collective effort among the ABC-UTC consortium, and has been reproduced using local NV and CA materials as presented in this study. Non-sieved sand is used to make the mix more practical and easy to reproduce at different parts of the nation. This presentation provides mechanical characterization of the ABC-UTC non-proprietary mix using different materials from Midwest as well as western US along with sieved and non-sieved sand with 1% and 2% steel fibers. Moreover, using the same non-proprietary UHPC mix, concrete maturity sensors from different vendors have been used to assess the validity of the well-established ASTM strength maturity method for UHPC

Title: Bridge Design Example
Synopsis: This presentation gives the details of a fully worked out example. It is a decked I-beam system for a bridge span of 250 feet. The method of design, the tools used in design, and the details will be presented. Aspects of the bridge superstructure design will include flexure, shear, camber, prestress losses, and stability analysis for handling, hauling, and erection.

Title: Building Design Example
Synopsis: This presentation gives the details of a fully worked out example of a voided box beam for office live load in a multistory building. The span is 72 feet and the spacing is 24 feet. It supports standard 8 in. hollow core planks and 3 in. concrete topping. Design for flexure, shear, torsion, and end zone will be shown. The beam will have considerable web openings for passage of utilities. Consideration of fire protection is given.
