Proj Overview

J.P. Carrara & Sons of Middlebury, VT was awarded the precast concrete products for the 20 million dollar, 1,900 seat “state of the art” division three collegiate multi-purpose Watson hockey arena at Bowdoin College in Brunswick Maine. The Watson Arena may become the first collegiate hockey arena to become LEED certified. The Watson Arena will hold up to 4,500 people for multi-purpose events and will include the most advanced refrigeration system available for year round ice capability.

The precast concrete products included: Over 16,000-sq-ft of 8" Hollow-core plank at the mezzanine level around the rink and in the stair shafts; 179 bleachers cast in a channel shaped form, 18 Spandrels at the rink ends, 12 Radius Solid Slabs at the corners, 132 Double Riser Steps, and 8 Lintels at the lobby.

Recycled Content:
 Fly Ash was used in the mix which is 100% post industrial material. Hollowcore mesh and embedded plates are 100% post consumer material.

Locally Harvested Materials
: The Precast Products were fabricated in a plant that is less than 500 miles from the jobsite. The origin of the constituents of the products (cement, steel, aggregate, etc.) on a weight basis result in a product that is theoretically manufactured less that 500 miles from the jobsite.
