Proj Overview

Located one mile from Albany International Airport and 15 minutes from the New York State Capitol and downtown, Marriott’s latest hotel project in Colonie, NY, celebrated its grand opening in October 2019.

The L-shaped building, which includes a 130-room Courtyard by Marriott in one wing and an 85-suite Residence Inn in the other, is located next to the Pioneer Bank headquarters on busy Wolf Road.

The dual brand concept has become more popular, with developers blending a mix of overnight rooms and extended-stay accommodations. Owned in partnership between Hampstead America and First Columbia, the hotels share an indoor swimming pool, fitness center and meeting space.

The same team worked on a hotel project in Troy, NY that also utilized precast concrete hollowcore plank and prefabricated bathroom pods to construct a durable yet economic structure very quickly. The façade includes EIFS and decorative stone while the hollowcore sits on load bearing prefabricated metal stud walls.

The connected hotels, which share a lobby, back-of-house space and other amenities, were designed by Baskervill Architects and were built by Bette & Cring Construction Group. Oldcastle Infrastructure produced and installed 107,000 square feet of 8-inch hollow core structural precast for the project. An additional 1,800 square feet of 12-inch plank was used for long spans at the pool roof. Oldcastle trucked the precast pieces from its Selkirk, NY plant some 20 miles away for just in time delivery to the site.

According to James E. Amsler, Senior Project Manager, Bette & Cring Construction Group, due to the schedule and a delay in the selection of bathroom modules the 215 pods had to be side installed. “Construction was occasionally shut down by the airport, so there were days when the crane could not operate,” adds Amsler. Because of the time of year and need to move fast, we placed the bearing walls and deck with polymer gypcrete prior to setting interior walls. Then the pods were placed on the finished floor.

The ability to accelerate the traditional construction timeline was a key factor in choosing factory built plank and bathrooms for this project. Concurrent construction activities result in time savings while indoor factory environment prevents weather delays and improves quality.  The result is solid construction of the Courtyard by Marriott and Residence Inn. This new dual hotel will both provide travel options and help meet pent-up demand in the Albany area.
