PCI Cares - Support local youth
Michelle Cross is a teacher at Steinmetz College Prep and during her planning periods she would let kids hang out in her classroom because it was their lunchtime, and the area isn’t the safest at times to just be outside. She had a few board games in her classroom and noticed how much the teens loved playing those games and interacting with each other. They weren’t on their phones, and they were making new friends as well. Over the term, they continued playing the games and building up to more games that involved strategic thinking as well. She saw a change in her student’s behavior, overall mindset, and could see how beneficial these types of gaming and social interaction were benefiting these students. At the end of the term, she gave away all her games and is looking to have this on a broader scale with other teachers at the school. This year, PCI Cares supports the “Lunchtime Unplugged” initiative at Steinmetz with a school gaming supply drive. You can add your support by purchasing a game from the wish list here: PCI Cares 2022 Committee Days School Gaming Supply Drive

Steinmetz College Prep High School opened its doors in 1934 and is a public 4-year high school located in the Belmont Cragin community area on the Northwest Side of Chicago, Illinois. Steinmetz is a part of the Chicago Public Schools district and has approximately 1,300 students, of which 87% are considered low-income in (students in families receiving public aid, living in substitute care, or eligible to receive free or reduced, price lunches). Steinmetz is a racially and ethnically diverse high school (71% Hispanic, 15% African-American, 9% Caucasian, 2% Asian) with 72% of our students graduating and enrolling in post-secondary education.
