Sustainability and PCI

The PCI Board of Directors approved the formation of the PCI Sustainability Committee in October 2006 because it recognized the importance of charting a strategic course for the future of the industry.

Those in the precast/prestressed concrete industry realize they must continuously improve their products and processes and contribute to sustained life on our planet.

This new committee is poised to develop strategies to elevate the knowledge base of PCI members as well as lead the sustainable world with innovative and integrated products and processes. In a series of meetings and strategic planning sessions, the committee has begun defining precast concrete's potential role in a sustainable future.

Committee formation and assignments

The committee was in place by May 11, 2007, and one of the first orders of business was determining the committee's mission and reporting structure. In June 2007, the committee"s request to report to the PCI Board of Directors as a strategic committee was granted. The board chose to have the committee report to the PCI Executive Committee.

Five task groups have been defined and each committee member has volunteered on one. The five groups are:

knowledge resources
marketing/communications
outreach
plant operations
technical resources

Knowledge resources

The knowledge resources task group has goals related to educating PCI members and customers about sustainability.

Marketing/communications

The marketing/communications task group is charged with communicating all information created within the other four task groups.

Outreach

The outreach task group will create relationships with other organizations to further the sustainability goals of PCI.

Plant operations

The plant operations task group will be looking at how a plant can best improve its processes.

Technical resources

Last, the technical resources task group will work to identify the research and technical information needed to better engineer sustainability in the precast/prestressed concrete industry.

Get involved

There is much work to be done on the topic of sustainability and in determining how best to move the precast/prestressed concrete industry forward.
